SharePoint Updates Coming in 2026: What Organizations Need to Know

SharePoint keeps evolving, and Microsoft has several updates rolling out over the coming months — from smarter sharing links to AI-powered page creation. Here's a plain-language breakdown of what's on the way.

Control Which Dashboard Cards Appear on Mobile

Dashboard authors will soon be able to choose which individual cards show up when a dashboard is viewed on mobile devices. This makes it easier to tailor dashboards for smaller screens, so users only see what's actually relevant to them. Existing dashboards won't change unless the author updates them.

A Single "Hero Link" for Sharing Files

Sharing files is about to get simpler. Every file and folder in SharePoint and OneDrive will get one primary sharing link — called the hero link — that you can update after the fact instead of creating and resending a new link every time access needs to change.

Rolling out late August to late October 2026.

Clearer Status Indicators on SharePoint Pages

The command bar on SharePoint Pages is getting a clearer status indicator, so you can tell at a glance whether a page is a draft or already published. A few menu items are also being reordered and relabeled for clarity.

Rolled out early to late August 2026.

Easier Layouts With Flexible Sections

Flexible Sections in SharePoint Pages are getting new layout guides, a persistent gridlines option, and the ability to convert a standard section into a Flexible Section without losing your existing layout — making page design faster and more forgiving.

Rolled out mid to late August 2026.

Create and Edit SharePoint Pages With Copilot

Page editors with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license will soon be able to build and edit entire pages through an AI-powered authoring panel. This rollout is currently on hold for some tenants — Microsoft has paused it and will announce through the Message Center when it resumes.

See How AI Tools Cite Your Content

A new analytics feature will show how Copilot and other AI agents reference your documents, news posts, and pages. SharePoint will display AI citation rankings in Popular Content, add a Total Citations card to page analytics, and introduce a dedicated AI Citations Analytics page under Site Usage — showing how many users reach your content through AI and which items are cited most often.

A Refreshed SharePoint Experience

Microsoft is rolling out a new SharePoint experience with a redesigned app bar and start page, giving the platform a more modern look and feel.

Create Charts on Pages With AI

A new web part is coming that lets you create charts directly on SharePoint pages with AI assistance — no need to build them elsewhere and embed them manually.

Rolling out mid-June to late August 2026.

Build Pages Using HTML

SharePoint is adding support for HTML pages. You'll be able to create HTML with Copilot directly in SharePoint, or upload your own HTML from another source. Once it's in the pages library, you can render it as a page, edit it further, and publish it — giving you more design flexibility alongside the existing ASPX page format.

Rolling out October 2026.

FAQ Web Part: Content Update Flow Being Retired

One feature is being phased out: the Content Update flow in the SharePoint FAQ web part, which let page authors compare existing FAQ answers against source content and review AI-suggested updates. From mid-September 2026, authors will no longer be able to run a Content Update check or receive AI-generated suggestions through this specific flow.

Everything else about the FAQ web part — including generating FAQs, importing them, and editing manually — will continue to work as normal. Existing content and any already-accepted suggestions are not affected. There's currently no direct replacement for this specific check.
