What is a WAN?

A wide area network, more commonly known as WAN, is a system that links networks across a large geographical environment (near infinite areas), unlike LANs, which only link networks in relatively small and close areas.

Benefits of WANs

WANs can connect networks over extremely large areas, office to office, city to city and country to country. However, because of the vast distances that can be linked together, WANs are usually slower than LANs.
