OneDrive Updates Coming in 2026: What's New and What to Expect
OneDrive is getting a wave of updates over the coming months — from clearer error messages to deeper Copilot integration. As a Microsoft Gold Partner in Saudi Arabia, Ctelecoms keeps track of these changes so our clients always know what's coming and how it affects their day-to-day work.

Changes to How OneDrive Content Appears in the Apple Files App
A change worth knowing if your team uses OneDrive through the Apple Files app on iOS. Microsoft is improving the integration with clearer upload status and progress indicators. But as part of the update, read-only OneDrive shared locations and SharePoint libraries will no longer show up in Apple Files.
That content isn't gone — you can still access it through the OneDrive mobile app. If you want it visible in Apple Files, use "Add to OneDrive" and it will continue to appear there, editable wherever you have permission.
Rolling out mid-August to early November 2026.
OneDrive for the Web Adopts the SharePoint Browsing Experience
OneDrive for the web is getting the modern SharePoint document library experience, with updated navigation and much broader filtering across your files, home, shared, people, meetings, and favorites views — all in one more consistent browsing experience.
Rolling out mid-August to mid-September 2026.
Clearer Sync Error Messages for Long File Paths
A small fix that will save a lot of frustration. Right now, if a file path exceeds OneDrive's 520-character sync limit, the error message just tells you it's too long, with no clear way to fix it. Microsoft is replacing that with a guided rename and move experience that shows exactly how many characters you're over and walks you through resolving it, even past the 260-character limit that normally blocks renaming in File Explorer.
The sync client will also keep running instead of stopping while the issue is unresolved.
For OneDrive for Business users on the Windows desktop sync client. Rolling out mid-September to mid-October 2026.
See SharePoint Library Views Without Leaving OneDrive
You can now access and manage SharePoint document library views directly within OneDrive for the web. Switch between existing views, create new custom views, and organize shared content, all without switching between services.
Rolling out late July to late August 2026.
A New Libraries View in OneDrive for the Web
OneDrive for the web is getting a new Libraries view, replacing the current "More places" experience. You'll be able to browse SharePoint document libraries from recent activity, your Teams, and your favorite sites, all from one refreshed, easier-to-navigate view.
Rolling out mid-July to late August 2026.
Anchored Comments in the PDF Viewer
PDF collaboration in OneDrive and SharePoint is catching up to Office documents. Starting October 2026, you'll be able to attach comments to a specific spot on a page or to selected text in the PDF viewer, and collaborate through replies and @mentions, bringing PDF review to the same level as commenting in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
This feature will be on by default with no admin action needed.
Available on Web. Rolling out October 2026.
Improved Capabilities for Files With Copilot in OneDrive Web
Copilot in OneDrive is about to do a lot more with your files. Starting December 2026, you'll be able to go from files to finished work directly from chat. Copilot will help you find the right content, analyze files and data, create polished outputs like summaries, dashboards, and presentations, and save or share the results straight from OneDrive.
Available on Web. Rolling out December 2026.
Manage Access to the OneDrive Photos Desktop Experience
New admin controls are coming for OneDrive Photos on Windows. Starting August 2026, organizations will be able to manage whether users can sign in with personal Microsoft accounts within the Photos experience, helping IT teams align OneDrive Photos with their access, data governance, and device-management requirements.
Available on Desktop. Rolling out August 2026.
Uninstall OneDrive Photos Without Affecting File Sync
More flexibility for Windows users who don't need the OneDrive Photos experience. Starting September 2026, you'll be able to uninstall OneDrive Photos independently, without uninstalling the OneDrive app, interrupting file sync, or deleting any photos or files. A clean removal option for anyone who prefers managing photos through another app.
Available on Desktop. Rolling out September 2026.
